Every digital marketer will tell you Keywords are critical for your business’s success online.
Why are Keywords important?
They are words or phrases Search Engines rely on to recognise your online content and allow them to understand your business’s context.
Ideally, they would also be the same words or phrases your customers are searching for online so they can find you.
Does a Keyword need to be one word?
No.
Keywords don’t have to be confined to a single word. They can be phrases or even questions. This flexibility allows you to be more creative and strategic in your keyword choices.
You can start with one word, like ‘pets’ or ‘clothing,’ but you can start adding more words and being more specific, like ‘cheap women’s clothing’ or ‘online gaming accessories.’
As long as you’re describing your content accurately, then there’s no right or wrong answer here.
What keyword to use?
Put yourself in your customers’ shoes. Imagine how they would conduct online searches to find your business. This empathetic approach will help you understand their needs and effectively cater to them.
If you’re a clothing store specialising in Jeans, are your customers more likely to search for ‘jeans for sale in Sydney’ or just ‘jeans’?
Maybe they’ll even search for a particular brand, ‘cheap Wrangler women’s jeans in Sydney‘.
The more specific your keywords, the more targeted your audience.
This targeted approach increases the likelihood of connecting with the right people who could become paying customers.
What not to do?
Avoid plucking words out of thin air and placing them all over your website, hoping for the best. You may have come across these websites before—you know, the ones where they would list every single town on the contact page.
Pest Control in Castle Hill, Pest Control in Pennant Hills, Pest Control in Rouse Hill… The list goes on and on.
It doesn’t do you any good as it makes you look spammy to search engines and annoying to humans.
Also, avoid misleading your customers. I’ve seen on real estate websites where houses come up in the search results for apartments because many buyers are looking for affordable accommodation, so they search for apartments. However, some real estate agents still want to have houses displayed just in case someone happens to like what they see.
